For the initial bedding, you need about 6–7 kg per m² of Böllis® straw structure pellets. (With a stall area of approx. 12 m², this equals around 75 kg for the initial application.)
You can purchase Böllis® in paper bags, various big bag sizes, or as loose material – on request also tipped or blown directly into a silo.
Tip: At first glance, the bedding quantity may seem small – just wait, steps 3 and 4 are still to come!
Spread the Böllis® centrally and evenly over the clean floor area of the horse stall. You can simply use a rake to distribute them.
Now moisten the pellets with approx. 1 liter of water per m². A watering can is particularly practical for this. The water allows the Böllis® straw structure pellets to swell optimally. If you like, you can then lightly mix the pellets with a rake or fork so they open up evenly everywhere.
Our expert tip: Use warm water – this significantly shortens the swelling time.
Now wait about 30 minutes until the Böllis® straw structure pellets have fully expanded. After that, you can let your horse back into the stall. Over the following hours and days, the horse’s natural movement will further break down the Böllis®.
Mat formation: Through regular movement, a soft, comfortable bedding mat gradually forms. The original pellet shape is no longer visible – what remains is a pleasant, evenly distributed lying surface.
We recommend removing manure daily with a manure fork. Wet spots should also be removed regularly. If needed, you can top up with about 2.5 kg of Böllis® per day – the added bedding does not need to be moistened.

High-quality manure
Böllis® manure is a valuable raw material. It takes up less space and can be composted much more easily than, for example, straw-based manure.
Do horses eat Böllis®?
As a rule, horses and ponies do not eat Böllis®. At the beginning, their natural exploratory behavior may lead them to nibble on it briefly. Our experience shows, however, that most horses lose interest very quickly and then leave the bedding completely alone.
How should Böllis® be stored?
Böllis® can be stored in a space-saving and uncomplicated manner. The only important thing is that they are kept dry.
Which type of surface are Böllis® suitable for?
Basically, Böllis® are suitable for all common surfaces—whether concrete, rubber mats, or compacted ground.
Do I need to moisten the bedding when adding more?
No. You can apply the additional bedding dry. When the stall is used, it will automatically bond with the existing mattress.
Are Böllis® suitable for horses with allergies?
Yes, absolutely. Böllis® are particularly low in dust and therefore support a healthy stable climate—ideal for horses with respiratory issues or allergies.
Do I need special tools for mucking out?
No — but it becomes even easier with our Böllis® manure fork. Thanks to the wider tine spacing, fewer pellets get caught, allowing you to remove manure faster and with less material loss.
Can I also use Böllis® in open barns or paddock stalls?
Yes. The bedding is suitable for both indoor and outdoor areas, as long as the surface is dry and not permanently exposed to the weather.
Where and how can the resulting manure be disposed of?
The manure produced when using Böllis® bedding is particularly valuable. During the pelletizing process, the lignin structure in the plant cell walls is broken down—this allows the pellets to decompose much faster and more efficiently in soil or in biogas plants. Compared to conventional horse manure, they even achieve a particularly high gas yield there.
Optionally, you can rent a manure container through us. We will collect it—filled with pure Böllis® manure—free of charge within a radius of up to 150 km around 48691 Vreden. Just get in touch with us!
